Center for Orthopaedics, Joint replacement & Sports medicine are at the forefront in offering the latest in orthopaedic treatments and surgical techniques. The centre perform surgical procedures which include the most current arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques – including major joint replacements including the Birmingham Hip resurfacing and shoulder surgeries, arthroscopies, laminectomies, the most delicate hand surgeries and much more.
Our Center delivers personalised care utilising latest research and evidence-based medicine. We treat sports related injuries which can be extremely painful and traumatic. Our sports medicine team works with surgeons to put sportspersons on a quick path of recovery.
Center for Orthopaedics, Joint replacement & Sports medicine is having a faculty of consultants, each pursuing a specialist field along with general orthopaedic work. The department is one of the best tertiary centres for management of complex trauma patients in the Africa.
This is usually undertaken in patients who have had their hip joints destroyed due to injury or diseases like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Hip resurfacing and replacements using ceramic liners are done for relatively young active patients. Padiyath Medicity - Hopital Du Cinquantenaire is one the first African Centres to use 36 diameter Delta Ceramic bearings.
Revision joint replacement is a frequent procedure and we have the entire revision instrumentation along with high speed burrs for difficult surgeries, both for the hip and knee joint. Ours is the first centre in Africa to use trabecular metal cone for revision knee surgery.
For knees that are severely damaged due to disease or injury, total knee replacement is the best option. The end of the thigh bone is normally replaced with a metallic component and the upper end of the leg bone with a polyethylene component with metal base plate. The latest Hi-flexion fixed bearing and mobile bearing designed knee components and those specifically designed for women (gender solution knees) are routinely used.
Joints like the elbow and shoulder, which are damaged due to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or due to traumatic injury are treated with total joint replacement.
The effects of stroke, joint replacement, amputation, and other disabling conditions can often be reduced through physician- supervised rehabilitative care. Services include treatment planning, a prescription for rehabilitative equipment, and disability determinations. Both outpatient and inpatient care for acute mobility problems are also provided.
Traditionally, many bone injuries caused by trauma were repaired using immobilisation devices placed outside the body. Our orthopaedic surgeons are leaders in using devices that are surgically placed on or in the injured bones. Those devices provide strong support and can be used in treating fractures of the pelvis, thighbone, hip, foot, and ankle.
This specialised modality is being widely used for treatment of infected/non-infected non unions, limb length discrepancy & deformity correction of limbs. This modality is also being used to treat high velocity complex fractures of limbs. Cases of cosmetic lengthening have been successfully done in the department. Department has now introduced computerized robotic Hexapod / SUV frame for deformity correction and limb lengthening.
Paediatric orthopaedic surgeries including polio, cerebral palsy, club foot, CDH (by birth hip problems), CTEV (twisting foot), Perthes' disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, congenital anomalies and operative treatment of fractures are regularly managed in the department.
Department is well-equipped for management of hand trauma including reconstruction of crush injury hand and various fractures in the hand and wrist.
The department is fully geared up for all kinds of complex foot & ankle surgeries. All kind of foot deformities, like hallux valgus, bunion, cavus and diabetic foot are managed surgically.
Keyhole surgeries of the joints are done with state-of-the-art instruments. Recovery from the surgery is much faster compared to traditional open surgery. The facili¬ties in arthroscopy include the video arthroscope for the knee, shoulder and hip, the smaller scope for wrist elbow and ankle, complete power shaver system, pres¬sure sensitive pump for joint distension, arthroscopic electronic power system, VAPR (radiofrequency energy delivery system), Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation and Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System (OATS).
Keyhole surgery of the knee joint is routinely done mainly for meniscal repairs, anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, double bundle reconstructions, biopsies, knee cap dislocations for MPFL reconstruction, popliteal cyst management etc.
Painful joints, Osteoarthritis and stiff joints can be unbearable and a major cause of disability in elderly population. Joint replacement is the only hope that remains for patients who want a quick relief from stiff joints. Joint replacement surgeries for arthritic patients are result-oriented and rewarding. Padiyath Medicity - Hopital Du Cinquantenaire offers Joint replacement surgeries with long term result to the patients. The objective is to provide a better quality of life.
This division offers excellent care in sports related injuries of the joints and ligaments. Arthroscopic techniques are used in cruciate ligament repair, meniscal repair, cartilage transfer, MPFL reconstruction, and multiple ligament injured knee.
The goal of the Sports Medicine team is to help each patient achieve their highest level of function. Our multi-disciplinary team consists of fellowship trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons that specialize in arthroscopic surgery, primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. The Orthopaedic Institute is fully equipped to care for all athletic injuries with on-site clinics and operating rooms, x-ray and high resolution MRI, physical therapy, and the human performance center.
