Sinusitis is a very common problem, with Acute Sinusitis frequently occurring after upper respiratory tract infections. Occasionally, acute sinusitis can develop into a chronic picture - Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS). This condition can lead to many days taken off work, with the associated health economics issues. Sinus conditions can also exacerbate pulmonary (lung) problems, eg asthma.

Tumours of the nose and sinuses are uncommon, but do occur, and may present with similar symptoms to sinusitis. They are also managed at the Nose & Sinus Clinic in conjunction with other hospital departments.

Sinus Disease

Patients with symptoms of nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, headaches/facial pain, smell disorders, or 'post-nasal drip' may have sinus problems which can be assessed at the Sinus Clinic.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: Frontal recess - mucosal preservation

The key aspect of good sinus surgery is the opening of the sinus drainage pathways, whilst preserving the mucosa (lining) of this pathways as much as possible. This prevents scarring of this area, and narrowing of these openings.

Radial EBUS

Till date we are the only centre in the country with facilities for radial endobronchial ultrasound.Just as linear EBUS helps us to sample lesions which are juxta-bronchial, Radial EBUS aids in diagnosing diseased areas within the lung tissue which were traditionally accessible only surgically. This procedure thus has greatly reduced the cost and morbidity in diagnosis of these lesions which can range from benign lung tumors to lung cancers and infections like Tuberculosis and fungal.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is cessation of breath during sleep that lasts for at least 10 seconds, as a result of repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occurs during sleep. This obstruction is usually associated with a fall in blood oxygen or arousal from sleep and may be caused by large tonsils or a large tongue, excess tissue in the upper airway, blocked nasal passages or the structure of the jaw and airway.

Patients with OSA may experience daytime symptoms such as sleepiness, fatigue, and problems with memory and concentration. Additionally, OSA can exacerbate other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, stroke, acid reflux and insomnia. Adequate treatment of sleep apnea can improve both symptoms and associated medical conditions.

A sleep study is used to evaluate how a patient breathes during sleep. A trained technician will connect wires to parts of the patient's head, chest, and legs in order to monitor the patient throughout the night, watching the oxygen level, breathing pattern, and sleep pattern.Sleep physicians, dieticians, bariatric surgeons, endocrinologists, psychologists and prosthodontists form a multidisciplinary team of specialists available for consultation from the clinic.
